The gel overlay is a natural-nail reinforcement done by laying a thin coat of UV gel on the plate. Ideal in April to repair winter fragility before chaining summer colours. From January to March, your nails have been through a lot. Cold contracts the plate, hot water dehydrates it, repeated sanitiser alters it. If you have worn continuous semi-permanent since autumn, the natural nail has had no break. The result: thinner plate, splitting, free-edge breakage.
Overlay: a reinforcement, not an extension
Two distinct families:
- The overlay lays a thin layer of UV gel directly on the natural nail. No length is added. We thicken the plate to keep it from breaking.
- Extensions (tips, Gel-X, forms) add length via a support. A different logic, far more visible.
If your goal is to keep your natural length without breakage, the overlay is the right answer.
Why April is the ideal month
- Your nails need help after winter: act before fragility turns into breakage.
- Summer exposes hands: sandals, short dresses, photos, travel. Your nails will be seen.
- Overlay is compatible with OPI semi-permanent: no need to give up colour.
- Three months of cumulative wear: an April overlay + a May infill + a June infill, and you reach July with a solid plate.

How an application unfolds
- Plate preparation: light filing, cuticle care, dehydration.
- Base gel application in a thin layer.
- UV curing.
- Overlay gel application in a thin, even layer.
- Curing, finishing file, cuticle oil.
- Optional: OPI semi-permanent in your chosen colour.
Total time: 50 minutes overlay alone, 60 minutes with semi-permanent.
💡 Tip: if your nails are particularly damaged, a three-step programme works well: initial overlay, infill at 3-4 weeks, then evaluation in June to move to forms if you want some length.
And after? Maintaining your overlay
To make it last 3-4 weeks without issue:
- Cuticle oil morning and evening during the first week, then daily.
- Latex gloves for dishwashing and cleaning.
- No home removal: take-off is done in salon (€20).
- Infill at 3-4 weeks to extend without redoing the whole thing.
And after summer?
The overlay's purpose is to give you stronger nails over time. At the start of autumn, you can take a break with a simple removal: the plate comes out thicker than before winter.
