Hot wax: synthetic resins at 50-55°C, removed in one go, fast and efficient on thick hair. Sugar wax (sugar + lemon + water): warm at 35-40°C, gentler on sensitive skin, ideal bikini and underarms. Regrowth identical with both: 3-5 weeks by zone. This is an educational comparison: at You Rêve Paris, we practise low-temperature hot wax. Sugar wax is not in our current catalogue.
Before the technical detail, an essential remark: there is no universally better wax. Both have specific advantages and limits. Choice happens by zone, skin type, individual tolerance — not by dogma.

1. Hot wax — speed and precision
Modern hot wax is a formulation based on synthetic resins (rosin, glycerol esters, zinc oxide, sometimes beeswax), melted at 50-55°C in a professional wax warmer, applied with a spatula.
Two salon variants:
- Hot wax with strip — wax applied in thin layer, non-woven strip placed, pulled in one go against the hair direction. Fast (full legs in 30 min), efficient on fine to medium hair.
- Hot wax without strip ("hard wax") — applied in thicker layer, hardens as it cools and removes in one piece without strip. Ideal for sensitive zones (bikini, underarms, face) as it adheres to hair and far less to skin.
Pros: speed (full leg in 30 min), efficiency on thick or coarse hair, precision on small zones (eyebrows, upper lip), wide range of specialised formulations (sensitive skin, acne-prone, after-sun).
Limits: heat sensation in application (well-tolerated when correctly dosed), can leave light redness 1-2h, contraindicated on recently sun-exposed skin or active dermatosis.
2. Sugar wax — gentleness, tradition
Sugar wax (sometimes called "halawa", "sugaring") is an artisan mixture made from three core ingredients: sugar, lemon juice, water. Some preparations add honey, essential oils, or plant extracts.
The paste is cooked to amber consistency, then kept warm (35-40°C) for application. Technique: apply by hand, against the hair direction, let penetrate 5 seconds, remove against the hair with a sharp motion.
Pros:
- Gentleness on skin — paste adheres only to hair (not skin itself), reducing sensation for sensitive skin
- Natural composition — sugar, lemon, water, sometimes honey. No synthetic resins
- Tolerance for acne or mild eczema — better tolerance than classic hot wax on these profiles
- Works on shorter hair (1-2 mm) than hot wax (which needs 5 mm minimum to grip)
Limits:
- Slower than hot wax (full legs: 45-60 min vs 30 min hot wax)
- Demands more technician skill — quality varies more between salons
- Less efficient on very thick or coarse hair (men) — multiple passes needed

3. Zone-by-zone comparison
| Zone | Our main rec | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Full legs | Hot wax with strip | Speed (30 min vs 60), efficiency on large surface |
| Classic / Brazilian bikini | Hot wax without strip ("hard wax") | Precision and low skin adherence |
| Hollywood bikini | Sugar wax or hard wax | Gentleness, ultra-sensitive skin, low post-treatment inflammation |
| Underarms | Sugar wax or hard wax | Thin-skin zone, lots of folds — sugar adheres without pulling skin |
| Upper lip | Hot wax without strip | Millimetric precision, clean contour |
| Eyebrows | Hot wax without strip | Same — absolute precision |
| Arms / forearms | Either | Both work well |
| Back / chest (men) | Hot wax with strip | Thicker hair, larger surface |
4. Pain — separating myth from reality
The question comes up at every consultation: « Which one hurts less? » Honest answer: both techniques rip a hair from its root, so neither is painless. But by subjective perception, sugar wax is generally described as "less aggressive" for two reasons:
- It's warm rather than hot (35-40°C vs 50-55°C) — no burn sensation
- It adheres only to hair, not skin — no skin tug
That said, modern low-temperature hot wax (notably hard wax without strip) has closed much of the gap. For sensitive zones, the experience is now very close between both techniques.
Honest tip: the first session is always the most uncomfortable, because hair is dense and pulls hard. By the second session (3-4 weeks later), hair is finer, sparser, sensation drops considerably. After 5-6 regular sessions, waxing becomes notably more tolerable, regardless of wax used.
