Medical pedicure is performed by a state-certified podiatrist (pédicure-podologue), a healthcare professional with a 3-year degree. They treat foot pathologies: ingrown nails, fungal infections, hyperkeratosis (severe calluses), corns, blisters, deformities. Tools: scalpels, rotary burrs, orthotics.
Beauty pedicure is performed by an aesthetician or nail technician (CAP aesthetic or equivalent). They handle aesthetics and comfort: soaking, exfoliation, gentle filing of moderate calluses, massage, cutting and shaping, classic or semi-permanent polish, nail art. 2. When to see a podiatrist
Clear podiatrist indications:
- Painful or recurrent ingrown nail
- Nail fungus (yellow, thick, brittle nail)
- Very thick, cracked, painful calluses
- Persistent corns or hard skin
- Plantar wart
- Diabetes, peripheral arterial disease, circulation issues: mandatory follow-up
- Chronic foot pain (custom orthotics)
For these situations, beauty pedicure is not recommended. A good aesthetician will say so and refer you to a podiatrist.
