Russian pedicure in Paris: the technique explained, and what we do instead

What is a Russian pedicure?

The Russian pedicure applies the same principles as the Russian manicure — but to feet. Forget the traditional foot soak: everything is done dry, with an electric e-file fitted with diamond or ceramic bits.

On the toes, the e-file removes the cuticle and thins the hard skin — heels, sole, edges of the toes — bit after bit, with no blade and no soak. The promise is that of the Russian manicure carried over to the feet: smooth skin, toenails cleared "as if by scalpel", colour applied as close to the skin as possible. It is mostly found in salons that already offer the Russian manicure, of which it is the extension — and it shares its limits: a rotary tool on the skin, a natural barrier removed, long training essential.

The steps of a Russian pedicure, as it is practised

This is not our protocol: we describe it so you know what the term covers when you see it on a salon's menu. Step 1 — Shaping: each toenail is filed, dry. Step 2 — Cuticles with the e-file: the skin fold is lifted, then the cuticle removed with diamond bits. Step 3 — Calluses: hard skin is thinned with ceramic bits, zone by zone, without a blade. Step 4 — Finish: dust removed, oil, then polish or gel polish if wanted.

Is the Russian pedicure really more hygienic?

It is the technique's flagship argument: the Russian pedicure is done entirely dry, so no stagnant water and no cross-contamination through the soak. The argument targets poorly maintained soaks, not the foot soak as such. What matters in a classic pedicure is the protocol: fresh water for every client, a basin cleaned and disinfected between appointments, foot files disinfected or single-use. Conversely, an e-file run over skin can open micro-lesions: the hygiene question moves, it does not disappear.

At You Rêve, we don't do the Russian pedicure

Let's say it plainly: at You Rêve Paris, 7 rue d'Argenteuil in the 1st arrondissement, we don't do Russian pedicures, any more than Russian manicures. That is no judgement on the technique or on the salons that have mastered it: it is a choice of care. We do not run an e-file over our clients' skin — and on feet, where hard skin is thick and uneven, the margin for error is even greater than on hands. Our e-files are used for removal, nail prep and BIAB overlays, never on cuticles or calluses. What we do instead

Two treatments, one goal: neat toenails, tidy cuticles, soft skin — with no rotary tool on the skin and no blade.

• Classic pedicure: toenails cut and shaped, cuticles pushed back with hand tools, hard skin softened with a foot file, finish — without colour, with classic polish or with OPI gel polish.
• SPA Luxe pedicure: the same care, preceded by an aromatic salt foot soak, then a scrub, a hydrating mask under warm towels and a foot and ankle massage. The choice for tired, dry feet, or feet shut in shoes all day.
