Russian vs classic manicure: the 2026 technical comparison

1. Technical definition of both schools

Classic manicure (historic French school)

The method practised in France for decades: hot water bath or softening, gentle cuticle push with boxwood stick (or orange stick), selective trimming with cuticle nipper for very adherent dead skin, oil finish.

• Approach: gentle, minimally invasive

Russian manicure (school from Russia / Eastern Europe)

Method introduced in France around 2018-2020. No water. The nail artist uses an electric file (e-file) with diamond or ceramic bits to file dead cuticle (eponychium) and skin around the nail, dry work.

• Tools: e-file (Promed, Strong, Saeyang), diamond bits, fine ceramic bits
• Water: no
• Duration: 45 minutes
• Approach: precise, ultra-clean, more technically demanding for the nail artist

2. Why the Russian manicure exploded

Three technical reasons:

1. Superior visual precision: e-file removes cuticle up to 0.1 mm under the nail base, which no manual file can do. Result: visually longer nail, perfectly clean base.
2. A promise of longer wear: without residual moisture around the nail, adhesion is said to be better and base lifting to come later. It is the most repeated argument — and the most debatable: gel polish wear comes first from nail-plate prep and application, not from removing the cuticle.
3. "Instagram photo" effect: Russian gives the very clean finish that photographs magnificently, with a "magazine nails" look.

3. The Russian manicure's constraints

Three limits:

1. Requires trained nail artist: mishandled, e-file can heat skin (pain), reach the dermis (bleeding), damage the matrix. That margin for error, on skin, is why we chose not to do it at You Rêve Paris: our e-files are for removal, nail prep and BIAB overlays, never the cuticle.
2. Not suitable for all skin: very thin, very sensitive, or actively eczema-prone skin: classic is preferable.
3. Not suitable if you cut your own cuticles between visits: Russian rebuilds better when eponychium has not been agitated.

• You want the cleanest possible "photo" finish: a Russian manicure, in a salon trained in the technique — that is not us
• Discovering professional manicures: classic + OPI gel polish
• Very thin skin or eczema: classic only
• You want maximum wear: careful prep and a clean application, whichever school — 3 to 4 weeks with OPI
• You cut your cuticles at home: stop, and let the outline even out over regular classic manicures

6. How a Russian manicure goes, in a salon that offers it

This is not our protocol: we describe it so you know what to expect if you book one elsewhere.

1. Disinfection hands and nails (1 min)
2. Length filing with manual file (5 min)
3. Cuticle pushing with dry boxwood stick (3 min)
4. E-file: diamond bit for dead cuticle, fine ceramic for skin (15-20 min)
5. Nail surface polishing (3 min)
6. Final hydration with cuticle oil (2 min)
7. Gel polish application if chosen (15-20 more min)

Sensations to expect: gentle vibration from e-file, sometimes coolness on worked zone. No normal pain or excessive heat. If you feel either, signal immediately.
