Classic polish: air-drying, lasts 3-5 days, acetone removal 1 min, ~€30. Semi-permanent OPI: LED cure, lasts 3-4 weeks, technical removal 15-20 min at salon, €45. Gel/builder: structuring layer applied under polish, reinforces fragile nails. Choice by rhythm: one-off event = classic; regular routine = semi-permanent; brittle nails = gel.
Before the comparison, an important note: visual rendering is identical to the client between classic polish and semi-permanent. When your mother or friend looks at your nails, she won't distinguish a classic OPI from a properly-applied semi-permanent OPI. The difference is in chemistry, not aesthetics.

1. Classic polish — the timeless base
Classic polish is a solvent-based lacquer that air-dries, 1-2 min to touch, 30-45 min to fully cure. It's the traditional formulation, on the market since the 1920s.
Pros: fast application (10-15 min beyond manicure), simple removal — cotton, remover, 1 minute; lets you change colour anytime; lower cost (full manicure with classic polish ≈ €30); no LED lamp, no aggressive chemistry.
Limits: 3-5 days wear without chipping; sensitive to shocks, hot water, household products; needs frequent touch-ups for "always perfect" looks.
For whom? Women who like changing colour often, who prefer not to deal with at-salon removal, who want a quick manicure for a specific event (wedding, party, photo).

2. Semi-permanent OPI — the long-wear formula
Semi-permanent OPI (often called "gel polish") is a methacrylate resin that polymerises under a 36W LED lamp. Each layer is applied then cured 30 seconds — the resin hardens instantly. A full application includes:
- Nail prep (light buffing, dehydration)
- Base coat (1 layer, cured)
- Colour (2-3 layers depending on pigmentation, each cured)
- Top coat (1 layer, cured)
- Inhibition layer wipe with 70° alcohol
Pros: 3-4 weeks wear without chipping or shine loss; mirror finish preserved; compatible with household products, swimming, hammam, sport; on toes, lasts 4-6 weeks (twice the duration on hands).
Limits: technical removal at salon (15-20 min, €10 alone, included with re-application); never DIY removal (peeling = damages keratin); higher cost (full manicure + application: €45); requires appointments every 3-4 weeks for "neat" look.
For whom? Women with regular rhythm who want to forget about their nails between visits. Travellers, athletes, busy mothers. And anyone preparing an event 1-3 weeks out (wedding, holiday, shoot).

3. Gel and builder — structural reinforcement
Builder gel (sometimes called BIAB, builder-in-a-bottle, or natural gel) is a thicker resin than semi-permanent. Applied in a single 0.5-1 mm layer, it structurally reinforces the nail without lengthening.
Not to confuse with extensions (capsules, Gel-X, forms) which add length — see our nail extensions guide.
Pros: reinforces brittle, splitting nails; 4-6 weeks duration; allows healthy natural nail growth underneath; aesthetic of "perfect natural nails" — slightly thickens without bulking.
Limits: higher cost than simple semi-permanent; longer application (60-90 min); more technical removal (file + acetone).
For whom? Women whose nails crack at the slightest impact, split, or are coming out of long extension wear and want to "let the natural nail breathe" while keeping a polished look. See also natural gel extensions in Paris.

5. Our recommendation by profile
You come once a quarter? → Classic polish or one-off semi-permanent for the occasion. Don't commit to a semi-permanent rhythm if you can't keep up the re-application cadence — a 6-week-old semi-permanent is unattractive.
You come monthly? → Semi-permanent OPI is the ideal rhythm. You arrive when your semi-permanent starts pulling at the cuticle, we remove, re-apply, off for another 4 weeks.
Your nails crack or split? → Builder gel (BIAB) for 2-3 consecutive cycles. You'll see a real difference in 8-12 weeks. Once strengthened, you can switch to standard semi-permanent.
💡 No-commitment test: our colour recommendation tool proposes OPI shades matching your skin tone. The test takes 2 minutes, and you arrive at the salon with 3 references ready to choose. Compatible with all formulas (classic, semi-permanent, gel).

Classic air-dries, 3-5 days wear, 1 min acetone removal. Semi-permanent OPI LED-cured, 3-4 weeks, 15-20 min salon removal. Visual rendering identical — difference is chemical and in durability.
Properly applied and removed: no. Damage comes almost always from DIY removal (peeling, acetone foil too long) or aggressive buffing. Our rule: removal always at salon.
OPI semi-permanent applied 2-5 days before: guaranteed wear, perfect photos, zero touch-up stress. Classic works if applied day-before or morning, but will chip in following days.
Classic manicure with classic polish: from €30 (25 min). Full manicure + OPI semi-permanent: €45 (1h). Application-only semi-permanent: €30 (30 min). Salon removal: €10 (included with re-application).
