In short

Gel polish is a thin polish cured under an LED lamp: it gives colour, without chipping, for 3 to 4 weeks. A BIAB overlay is a flexible builder gel applied to the natural nail: it gives strength, without adding length, for 3 to 4 weeks too. Healthy, strong nails: gel polish (from €30, €45 with a manicure). Soft, brittle, peeling or bitten nails: BIAB (€60 with colour built in, €70 with gel polish on top). Either way, removal is done at the salon, never peeled off. You Rêve Paris, 7 rue d'Argenteuil, Paris 1st: book online.

1. Two products, two jobs: colour or strength

Gel polish (called semi-permanent in France) is applied like a polish, in thin coats, and cured under an LED lamp. We use OPI GelColor, a professional range. Its job: colour and shine, without chipping, for 3 to 4 weeks. It is a thin layer: it dresses the nail, it does not build it. On a healthy, strong nail, that is all you need. Everything about the application, wear and aftercare is in our gel polish guide.

A BIAB overlay (Builder In A Bottle) is a semi-transparent, flexible, self-levelling builder gel, brushed directly onto the natural nail. It creates a shell that follows the curve of the nail and absorbs everyday knocks, without lengthening it. Its job: strength. It is worn with the colour built into the gel, or under OPI gel polish. You may also hear gainage (the French word), kapping or builder gel: the treatment is called “Gel reinforcement / BIAB Kapping” on our menu, and our article BIAB vs builder gel covers the technical nuances.

💡 “Reinforced gel polish”, “gel polish with or without an overlay”? You may come across these words when comparing the two. At You Rêve, the reinforced version of gel polish has a simple name: the BIAB overlay + gel polish, builder gel underneath, OPI colour on top.

The key point: wear is the same. What changes is what sits under the colour. Gel polish on a soft nail goes with the nail when it bends or breaks; an overlay protects the nail itself while it grows. BIAB also takes longer at the salon and costs more. Still weighing up regular polish? Our guide to classic polish, gel polish or gel compares all three.

3. Choose gel polish if…

For a longer treat, the Luxury SPA manicure + gel polish (€65, 60 min) adds a soak, a scrub, a mask and a hand massage. Every option is on our manicure page.

4. Choose BIAB if…

Two options: the BIAB overlay with colour built in (€60, 60 min), one step to strengthen and colour, or the BIAB overlay + gel polish (€70, 75 min) to pick your shade from the whole OPI range. BIAB adds no length: for that you need gel extensions. It is all on our BIAB overlay and extensions page.

5. Switching from one to the other, and upkeep

From gel polish to BIAB: add gel polish removal (€10, 15 min) to your BIAB booking. From BIAB to gel polish: removing the overlay costs €20 (20 min). If you stick with the same treatment, removal drops to €5 before new gel polish, and to €10 before a new overlay, in the same booking.

The rule for both: removal is done at the salon, never peeled off. It is not the product that damages the nail, it is peeling: gel polish or an overlay pulled off by hand takes the top layers of the nail with it. Why you should never do it at home: our article on gel polish removal.

The rhythm: every 3 to 4 weeks in both cases. For BIAB, that means an infill, or a removal and a new overlay, at the salon. In between, wear gloves for the washing-up and cleaning, and do not use your nails as tools.

Frequently Asked Questions

Gel polish is a polish: a thin layer, cured under an LED lamp, that gives colour and shine without chipping. A BIAB overlay (Builder In A Bottle) is a flexible builder gel brushed onto the natural nail: it forms a shell that strengthens the nail without lengthening it, with the colour built into the gel or gel polish on top. Gel polish colours, BIAB strengthens.

At the salon we quote the same wear for both: 3 to 4 weeks. The difference is not how long it lasts but how strong the nail is: on a soft or brittle nail, the overlay protects the nail itself, whereas gel polish goes with the nail when it breaks.

Neither damages the nail, as long as both application and removal are done at the salon. What damages the nail is peeling: gel polish or an overlay pulled off by hand takes the top layers of the nail with it. At the salon, removal is gentle and nothing is ever pulled off.

Yes, it is one of the treatments on our menu: the BIAB overlay + gel polish (€70, 75 min), strength underneath and OPI colour on top. Without gel polish, the BIAB overlay with colour built into the gel costs €60 (60 min).

Gel polish: €30 on its own (30 min), €45 with a classic manicure (45 min). BIAB overlay: €60 with colour built in (60 min), €70 with gel polish on top (75 min). In quieter weekday slots: €25, €40, €55 and €65.

Add gel polish removal (€10, 15 min) to your BIAB booking: it is done at the salon, gently, just before the overlay. And if you later go back to gel polish, removing the overlay costs €20.

No: it strengthens the nail at its natural length. For extra length you need gel extensions (tips, Gel-X or sculpted forms, from €65), described on our overlay and extensions page.
