Valentine's Day Nails: The Colours & Nail Art Guide

Valentine's Day is one of the busiest nail appointments of winter. And yet, every year the same questions come up at the chair: which red really suits me? does it have to be red? when should I book? how do I take it off without damage? 1. Signature reds by your skin undertone

"Red" is easy to say. But every skin has its red: a burgundy flatters a cool complexion, a coral lights up a warm one. Before choosing a shade, identify your undertone — it is the only criterion that really matters.

Warm, cool or neutral: three quick tests

• Wrist veins: blue or purple → cool undertone; greenish → warm; a mix of the two → neutral.
• Jewellery: silver and platinum flatter you → cool; yellow gold and copper → warm.
• The sun: skin that tans easily → warm; skin that pinks and stays rosy → cool.

Cool undertone: cherry or burgundy

Big Apple Red (OPI N25) is the universal cherry red: clean, neither blue nor orange, a matte-lipstick effect on the nail. It never misses and photographs beautifully in low restaurant light. For something deeper, Got the Blues for Red (OPI W52) leans into a velvet burgundy with an aubergine undertone — more matte, more sophisticated, our "fine-dining" option. Both shades are ideal on light to neutral skin.

Warm undertone: coral or fiery red

On golden, olive or tanned skin, an orange-leaning red works wonders. Cajun Shrimp is a sunny coral, almost watermelon — cheerful, a little retro, it brings warmth even in the depth of winter. Bolder still, Color So Hot It Berns! is an intense fiery red, on the edge of tomato without ever tipping into orange: wear it as a solid coat, no nail art, red-carpet style. Red is not compulsory

Nothing says you must wear red on 14 February. Three very Valentine's alternatives, without the front-row red:

2. Six Valentine's nail-art ideas

A single solid coat is often enough. But if you want to take it further, here are six designs our nail artists apply every year — from the most subtle to the most declared, all in OPI semi-permanent for 2-3 weeks of wear.

Red accent nail on nude

The most universal, and the easiest to live with: eight nails in nude (Tickle My France-y or Bubble Bath) and two accent nails in glossy red (Big Apple Red), usually the ring fingers. Discreet at the office, elegant at night. Included in the manicure price, no supplement if the design stays simple.

Fine gold heart on a nude base

The most delicate version: a small gold heart painted freehand with an ultra-fine brush on the accent nail only, then sealed under top coat. Red passion French

The modern French, Valentine's edition: the traditional white tip swapped for a Big Apple Red. On short or medium nails, the lengthening effect is striking. +€10 with the French design option.

Controlled gradient, pink → red

A subtle fade: a powder-pink base sliding into a deep-red tip (Got the Blues for Red). A very contemporary watercolour effect, for those who love red without wearing it flat. Controlled gradient option +€10.

Thin burgundy line

Parisian minimalism: a thin burgundy line drawn vertically down the centre of each nail on a nude base. A jewellery-like effect, ultra-wearable. Brushed on freehand by Xin. Quoted on consultation depending on the number of nails.

Controlled gradient, cream → rosy

Also called the baby boomer: the white French gives way to a soft gradient from the lunula (cream base) to a more saturated rosy tip. This is the "in love, but with class" Valentine's design. Controlled gradient (baby boomer) option +€15.

3. Planning your appointment: the right timing before 14 February

The biggest mistake is to leave everything to the last minute — or worse, to the day itself. Here is how to organise it calmly, whatever the year.

Book two to three weeks ahead

Valentine's Day concentrates demand: end-of-day slots and the weekend before the 14th go first. Booking two to three weeks ahead secures your ideal time. If you are planning several treatments (manicure + lash lift + waxing), book even earlier.

Apply the semi-permanent about a week before

An OPI semi-permanent holds 2 to 3 weeks. The ideal application is 3 to 10 days before the 14th: the colour has time to "settle" on the finger — worn in, natural, photogenic. Applied on the morning itself, it is too shiny, the margin for error is nil, and you spend the day watching your nails instead of enjoying it. Three options depending on the mood:

• Classic manicure + OPI semi-permanent — €45 (45 min): the standard, efficient formula.
• SPA Luxe manicure + OPI semi-permanent — €65 (60 min): soak, scrub, mask and massage for a genuine moment of care.
• Classic manicure + classic polish — €40 (40 min): if you are cutting it fine, it is often still available and needs no long curing.

The duo appointment

Valentine's is also shared — with a friend, your mother or your sister. The salon runs several treatments in parallel: two SPA Luxe manicures side by side, a pedicure + manicure combo where you swap halfway, or a manicure paired with a lash lift for a complete face in one visit. Just mention when booking that you would like two synchronised stations.

4. After Valentine's Day: care & removal

The dinner is over, the red is still holding — exactly what you expect from a well-applied semi-permanent. Red pigments are mechanically more opaque than nudes or pastels: more heavily loaded, they wear impeccably but call for the right method at removal.

The golden rule: never peel

Pulling off a still-bonded semi-permanent tears away the surface layer of keratin from the natural nail — the gel resin bonds harder than the cohesion between keratin layers. The result: split, weakened nails, sensitive to hot and cold, and growth that seems slowed for 4 to 6 weeks. That is a lot of damage for five minutes saved.

Professional removal in minutes

The nail comes out smooth, intact, ready for what's next.

And then?

Three logical follow-ups after removal: go straight into a fresh set (removal €10 + semi-permanent manicure €45 = €55) for a new colour; switch back to classic polish (hands-only application €15), freer for changing shades; or let them breathe for a few weeks with daily cuticle oil if you feel any fragility. As for the red, it carries naturally into mid-March — it is as much a late-winter colour as a Valentine's one.
